Germantown softener settings, from 24 grains to your faucet
Every softener carries a hardness setting in grains per gallon. On Germantown's village mains, the Village's six-well average of 24 grains is where that setting starts, and a reading at your own faucet is where it gets decided.

For a softener on the village mains, the Village's published average is the natural first number. It is already in grains per gallon, the unit a softener setting uses, so it can go straight onto the dial as a starting point.
It is a planning figure for the whole system, though, not a measurement taken in your house.
Why the faucet reading has the last word
Because 24 is an average of six wells, the water at a given faucet can sit above or below it. The plumber tests your faucet before connecting anything, and the softener is set from that reading rather than from the Village's figure alone.
The same faucet is tested again at the end of the visit, and the job is not done until it shows zero hardness.
Reading the setting on the softener you have
The hardness setting on an existing softener is usually shown on the control head's display or listed in the owner's manual. Write it down before you call.
If nobody in the house has ever looked at it, or the softener came with the house, the number on the dial may be whatever it was given on its first day. If you know whether the unit regenerates on a timer or by the water the house uses, note that as well.
When the dial and the water disagree
A setting well below 24 means the softener was set for softer water than the village average; a setting far above it means it was set for harder water. Neither is a crisis, and either one is worth mentioning on the call.
If your own test came back in milligrams per liter, divide it by 17.1 before comparing it with the dial.
Private wells set from their own number
None of this applies to a house on its own well. Its starting setting comes from the hardness on its lab sheet, converted to grains if needed, and the faucet test on install day settles it the same way.
Common questions
What should a softener be set to in Germantown?
On village water, start from the Village's 24-grain average; the plumber's reading at your faucet on install day fixes the actual setting. On a private well, start from the lab sheet.
My softener's setting is a mystery. Is that a problem?
It is worth checking, nothing more. Read the setting off the control head or the manual and compare it with 24, or describe the unit on the call and ask.
